The posters are now on sale at Page 45 in the city of Nottingham, UK, for £4.99 each.

They are also still available on the Oni Press web store (which I believe only ships to the USA).

I believe the Beguiling (in Toronto) has/had some of the posters, and they should still be selling the t-shirts (which they ship overseas!).

I can't send you a poster if you live elsewhere in the world. Sorry! I don't have any posters.

The Scott Pilgrim series is being reissued by Harper Collins / Fourth Estate in the UK and Commonwealth countries (excluding Canada). Vols 1-5 will ship in the first half of 2010. Volumes 2/3 and 4/5 are being combined into 400-page omnibus editions. Volumes 1 and 6 will be separate.

Note: I have nothing to do with the cover design of foreign editions (or splitting them up into omnibus editions!). That's the publisher's initiative talking.

I assume they'll be edited for "English", but I'm not entirely certain. I do a bit of a mishmash with the Canadians saying "colour" and the Americans saying "color", although I can't promise that I've been sticking to that 100% of the time.

Obviously, the UK editions seem to be largely prompted by a Hugely Popular And Influential British Director doing the film version of Scott Pilgrim. But hey, they'll be much more widely available around the world.

EDIT: I forgot to mention: for U.S. people, the bookstore chain Borders is now carrying a special "Scott Pilgrim Bundle" of vols 1-3 with a new label that says something about how it's going to be a movie. They don't seem to have it in stock in their online store, but they are in the physical stores now. Good holiday gift for unsuspecting friends and relatives? (These are the exact same Oni Press editions as usual - the only special thing about them is that they are shrinkwrapped together with that blue label and that they are widely available at Borders over the holiday season.)

What's going on:

Nothing

I will be working on this book for the foreseeable future. The cover is in progress and I'm thinking it (and the title) will be publicized sometime in December. (Hint: the title has "Scott Pilgrim" in it and the cover has Scott Pilgrim on it)

We got a dog over the summer. You may have noticed me only posting dumb ol' dog pictures. Her name is Midge and she is part American Eskimo, part Pomeranian. I'm not sure which parts. She looks more like an Eskimo -- she's not insanely poofy like a Pom, but she has black and white spots (Eskimos are all-white).

So that's what's up. I got a dog and I'm drawing comics. I did a quick website drawing, mostly 'cause I took a picture over the weekend that I thought would work well on the website, and I drew a little wacom doodle using brushes that I downloaded the other day from this wonderful person.

Updates here will continue to be infrequent, but I'm usually found babbling on twitter.

This is a completely redone song from way back in the day. It was never finished, and was ridiculously long and boring. I cut it down to the essentials, cleaned up the lyrics a little, and turned it into a fast rocker.

06. Son Of A Gun (I Betcha Think This Song Is About You) (3:41) [download]
This is a cover of a P. Diddy remix of a Janet Jackson song from 2001 (featuring Missy Elliot). Since I am singing the parts originally sung separately by Janet, Missy and Diddy, the song sounds kind of confused and schizophrenic, which I like.

These two songs are the first on the Singles Club to not contain any swearing! (There is a bleeped-out swear on the Janet Jackson song) (EDIT: maybe the Cardigans cover didn't have swearing?)

The story behind these songs is that I bought a cheap bass guitar, so both of these are pretty bass-driven.

03. Heard About You [Feat. Jesse Dangerously] (3:59) [download]
This is a brand-new song. It is a lucky song, for it features Rap Legend Jesse Dangerously doing a verse in the middle. He did the rapping, the sound effects during the rapping, and the scratching towards the end; I did the other stuff. I wrote it pretty much right after the first two singles club songs went up (this was June). I think it's about celebrity, internet fame, and anonymous comments. Jesse's rap makes more sense than my lyrics, probably.

04. Bullshit Kid '09 (2:35) [download]
I did a demo of this song in 2006, always meaning to do a nicer version eventually. In the meantime, Allison Weiss did a pretty sweet cover of it and I started getting requests for it (having taken the demo offline because it was kinda sucky). So here it is. True to my word, since it's a b-side I didn't put that much work into it and the mix is slightly wonky, but I kind of like it. It has an R&B-style beat and an electric guitar part that I recorded months ago.

I demo'd the next two songs a while back, but I have no idea when I'll get to them. Hopefully by, um, the end of the year?

Living Game

I bought LIVING GAME, Vol 3 at a used manga shop in North York, 3 or 4 years ago. The woman at the store actually threw it in for free with the rest of my random crap, now that I think of it. Anyway, I think it changed my world a little.

Mochiru Hoshisato does, I guess, "seinen" comics. They're about young people out in the world, doing boring, mundane, stressful things. This particular 10-volume saga is about -- and forgive me if I fudge the details, it's been a while since I read it -- a young guy whose job loses its office lease, and through a screwball series of events, the whole company has to move into his apartment. It's like "The Office" set in a tiny Tokyo apartment, and it's all about renting and real estate and boring, mundane, stressful, life, thus LIVING GAME.

The "hook" is that a young girl comes to work at the office, I think she's 17, and she ends up living with him too. He doesn't want to get involved with her because she's underaged, and there's tension and romantic hijinks. But the star of the story, in this volume especially, is feeling like you're losing your mind because your living situation is untenable.

The thing Hoshisato does is tell these stories deftly, lightly, humourously, with a deceptively simple style. He's one of my favourite manga artists. He's got some superficial similarities to Rumiko Takahashi (I think this is from the same years as early Ranma 1/2), but everything's very clean and cute and perfectly-balanced.

Above: a sequence where the young girl has just answered the phone. It was a woman. The young girl is already kind of infatuated with our hero. The other woman has never met our hero, but another woman is trying to set them up. There's a misunderstanding. The young girl gets upset, THROWS open the closet, GRABS all her shit, STUFFS it in her backpack! She's gonna move out SO HARD! I love it.

Here's a 3-page dream sequence from later in the third volume (read right-to-left):

This is actually the second big dream sequence in this volume. In the first, he dreamed that he was living in a huge house with the young girl, and everything was great, and then the whole office staff showed up for work at his huge house, and life was still shitty.

This dream is the opposite: he lives in an apartment a quarter the size of his real-life apartment. But she's still there, keeping him grounded. It's domestic and nice, until he realizes that the company is STILL using his apartment for an office, even though it's physically impossible! Oh my god, the stress!

Anyway, I love it. The panel sizes, the various scales (from closeup to full-body to full-room on the first page), the cuteness, the subtle screentones, the level of detail when it's called for -- the oppressive detail of the tiny apartment on the second page, followed by the claustrophobic exterior shot, the building completely surrounded by faceless skyscrapers. The sound effects on the third page, as the dream starts crashing down -- I don't even know what they mean, but they're stressing me out, man!

This book has been a huge help with my comics. It lives by my drawing desk. I flip through it when I feel like I don't know what I'm doing. I just have it in Japanese -- I didn't know what was going on at all, until I found this scanlation a few years later -- but it's a great comfort to me.

BONUS:
I had the urge to flip this page and diagram it in English, whatever it's worth.

The rest o' the year

Scott Pilgrim The Movie wraps this week officially, although a smaller crew (and some cast members) will be finishing up leftover shots until the end of the month.

I went to Montreal last week to work on the video game. It's gonna be so good! I wish I could tell you more. It's in the very early stages but we made a lot of great progress, and the team is awesome, and I love Montreal.

I remodeled radiomaru.com slightly (maybe you saw) in anticipation of a full-on redo of the site, coming soon. Also because the picture up there was very wintery, and it's August.

There's also a brand-new scottpilgrim.com redesign coming v. soon. Maybe even tomorrow! I'm almost finished with it.

I'm going to be appearing at the West Hollywood Book Fair in, uh, West Hollywood, Los Angeles. That's October 4th (a Sunday). All my crazy LA fans will no doubt be happy to hear that.

Otherwise, I'm about done for the year and it's time to hibernate and make this comic book happen.

EDIT: I've been reminded that the new Scott Pilgrim shirt and "Knives Love" shirt are available on Oni Press dot com. Note: The "Love" shirt is already sold out in Small, but other sizes are still available. It won't be reprinted (it's a limited edition).

SAN FRANCISCO - July 28, 2009 - Ubisoft today announced the development of a video game based on Universal Pictures' upcoming action-comedy, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Co-written and directed by genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead), the film stars some of Hollywood's leading young talent, including Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad), Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live Free or Die Hard), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four series), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Mae Whitman (Arrested Development), and Jason Schwartzman (upcoming Funny People). The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal through a licensing agreement with Universal Partnerships & Licensing and is expected to launch worldwide with the film's 2010 release.

The live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World film is based on a series of award-winning graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The series has earned numerous awards including: Entertainment Weekly's Independent Comic of the Year, Wizard's Indie Book of the Year and the Harvey Award for Humor in Comics. Published by Oni Press, the sixth and final volume in the series is set to debut in 2010 - also timed to the film release. In the film, Scott Pilgrim (Cera) has just met the girl of his dreams (Winstead), but the only catch to winning her is that her seven evil exes are coming to kill him.

My additions:

Some of the gaming sites mentioned XBLA or PSN but they were apparently just guessing, because no platform has been announced yet.

You probably won't hear much about this game for the next few months. The game is still in the very early stages (we only officially "did the deal" in the past few weeks and it's maybe 3-4 weeks into development right now). It's going to be very cool and I'll be very involved. And there will be other exciting announcements as development rolls on.

The most important thing is that it's being made by huge fans of the books and it's a passion project for a lot of people (including me, obviously)! So just sit back and wait and every time they announce some information you'll be like "OH MY GOD WOO"

NOTES: These are from my first walk across the con floor (it opened to the public at 9:30 AM -- I was on the floor a bit earlier due to being an exhibitor with Oni Press, but they actually prohibit you from buying anything or getting in line for stuff, to be fair to all the fans). Anyway, Comic-Con fills up pretty much immediately. They let waves of people in so as not to have a huge tramplefest at the front door, and running is NOT ALLOWED, but people get where they want to be really quickly. So I went to Kinokuniya right at opening to hunt for cool artbooks, found nothing, and by 9:50 I was already seeing costumes and lineups and general chaos. (Side note: I later found another booth selling vintage/used Japanese artbooks and picked up some great ones, including Kenichi Sonoda's oddly-named "Garden Party" ca. 1992.)

- a Haruhi Suzumiya Revoltech for Hope (actually of Yuki, wearing a cape and hat and with a Gibson SG and the cat on her shoulder!)
- two awesome artbooks that I already mentioned
- two awesome t-shirts from Giant Robot (one because I spilled coffee on my shirt at 9 AM on the very first day)
- one awesome t-shirt from Adult Swim (a Killinger shirt from Venture Bros)
- some awesome manga from Viz, plus Miyazaki's biography!

NOTES: My mom asked about this when she called me. The story here is that Hope was signing at the signing area and needed change to sell books. I went to the nearest vendor and very politely asked if I could buy m&m's with a hundred, and get fives and tens back. She very sweetly allowed this transaction to go forward and was extremely helpful. I am not just a big jerk with a lot of cash!

That's about it for the tweets! Later that day I ended up at the Pop Candy Meet-Up and had drinks and dinner with Hope, Cecil Castellucci and Ray Fawkes. I said hello to Whitney Matheson and I think Marc Bernardin (who I also randomly saw at Fox-TV during Hope's thing). It was a nice, relaxed, drunk-y eat-y close to the show for us. We left early on Sunday and got home that night.

We're going to San Diego Comic Con next week! I'm a "Special Guest" this year, for the first time, which means I get to do some panels, and maybe you'd be so kind as to attend one or more of them.

(It's me, with acknowledged masters Trondheim, Seth and Lutes, plus comics' two other Asians! Oh my god, what? I have no idea what this panel is going to be like. Probably very interesting for you and terrifying for me.)

I don't have my signing schedule just yet, but I think it's going to be something like: late Thursday, midday Friday, and both of those periods on Saturday. I will be leaving on Sunday, and I won't be attending Preview Night on Wednesday, but you've got three days and approximately 5 1/2 specific hours in which to get stuff signed.

As I may have said earlier, there are going to be a few new t-shirt designs, hopefully, and new button designs which I've already shown you, and the rest of the TCAF prints, and I'm not sure what else is left over from olden times. I will be signing whatever you throw at me, but probably not sketching at all due to time and volume.

Here's some button designs. New t-shirts and buttons debuting at San Diego. Buttons will be convention-exclusive; shirts will probably be available online after the con. I'll show you the shirts when they're finished!

And here are some pages from Kimagure Orange Road, which I've been reading. It's manga from the 80s, beloved by many now-aging nerds (it was a little before my nerd-time, and I've only just discovered it). I'm not posting these to share the story or dialogue, just for the sheer love of comics. The panel layouts, the figure sizes, the hair-to-face ratios, mmmmmmm.

(Note: These pages read right-to-left, since they're manga. And this is a quasi-legal scanlated version, which you can find by googling; this series has never been officially released in English as far as I know. Correct me if I'm wrong)

The guy is taking pictures of the girl. I love the big panels of their legs, like this weird vulnerable moment. The overall flow and energy of the page is great. That little panel where she gets mad and makes him stop stands out, just like it oughta. Note how he's going "towards" her (right-to-left) while shooting the photos, and she's storming "away" from him (left-to-right) after she gets mad.

Amazing "fashion shot" page. The over-the-shoulder full-length costume shot and all the establishing of the airport kill me. I love this page so much. That airplane drawing is amazing. Love the establisher of her shoes.

I'm posting these to be more like Brandon Graham, whose blogging is always a treat. I'm not constantly digging up new stuff like him, but I have been reading this manga and saving a ton of pages for future reference, and thought I'd share. I'll try to post more like this. Let me know if it's interesting at all.
