stars of track & field are beautiful people

kitties
I haven't been posting very frequently because i'm supposedly working hard on the book or something. anyway, here is a picture of a girl who dressed up as Ramona at this past weekend's New York Comic-Con (I was not at the con).

apparently I listened to Jacob songs 102 times last week, according to my last.fm thingy. Also I have been listening to belle and sebastian, for the first time in my life, because their new album kind of got me reassessing them, and then I discovered the recent If You're Feeling Sinister Live album, which has them re-playing their old album in its entirety, only now they know how to play and stuff? That's pretty cool. I mean, it turns out those songs were pretty good and it was just the playing and singing and recording that drove me insane about them. "Judy and the Dream of Horses" is seriously a nice song now. I think you can get it on iTunes if you're interested.

well, that's all... just working, making dinners, watching TV shows with hope... the book is going pretty well, etc... see you later!

If You're Feeling Sinister is the only B&S album I really like. Eeeevery song. Got a few others, but for whatever reason they don't do anything for me. :| Now I want to listen to Judy and the Dream of Horses!

I've been repeating the John Vanderslice CD you mentioned several weeks ago. I'm ashamed I hadn't heard of him before this.

I didn't really like most of his stuff before this, honestly. He was a great producer (he also produced some Beulah albums and a bunch of other stuff I forget) but his songwriting was a bit obtuse.

The lyrics are pretty flashy, but it seems more a collection of one-liners than a real cohesive run. The production on it seems to be the star on display here, much like star producer David Lanois' solo CD work. I'll have to track down Vanderslice's other production work. For some reason, his work reminds me of Eric's Trip, but not on anything concrete I can draw a line from.

The lyrics are actually my favorite part of Pixel Revolt!! I like all of his albums, but his latest one just seems to be the most coherent of all of them.

I've only heard the 2 most recent albums, but the last one basically only had two or three songs I liked (the one about being a pharmaceutical rep in Saigon was the best). The current one is all good, except the song about the detectives is slightly annoying. Some of it is SOOO good, I really like the one about golden gate park, etc. And his instrumentation is ridiculously good as always.

I kind of like how his songs are little fictions, but sometimes that bugs me too. I mean, I like the 9/11 song (the dance dance revolution one i think), and I like most of the lyrics overall. They're definitely not just one-liners, you have to give them a bit more attention before they really come forward though.

haha.. that's cute.

there's a live version of 'judy and the dream of horses' floating around the interweb from belle & sebastian's 2004 coachella performance that is pretty awesome. (not as good as it was in person... but still.)

i could upload it for you if you're interested.

Belle & Sebastian is one of those artists on my "To Listen To" list. unfortunately, none of my friends have any of their stuff for me to bum. i'm still waiting on my friend to make me her ultimate Bob Dylan CD.

is there a particular Belle & Sebastian album you recommend?

honestly i've only ever listened to the new album ("THE LIFE PURSUIT") which is pretty good, and "IF YOU'RE FEELING SINISTER - LIVE AT THE BARBICAN" which is the one I said you can get on iTunes. They are a band that I used to hate with all my heart.

ah, well. i guess i'll chalk it to trial & error. i could always look on MySpace, but i doubt they have a page there.

then again, there's always random CD shopping. i'm too old-fashioned to get into iTunes.

Speaking of Belle & Sebastian, I saw a quick CD review over on Cool Hunting (http://www.coolhunting.com/archives/2006/02/isobel_campbell_1.php) the other day that has made me very curious:

"After leaving grunge band the Screaming Trees, Lanegan released six mesmerizing, if overlooked, solo records—all gems. But as much as I loved those records, it always felt like something was missing. To my surprise, that something was Isobel Campbell, the angelic-voiced Scottish cellist. In a career move that seemed very questionable at the time, she quit Belle and Sebastian right as the band was reaching the upper echelons of indie-rock. But on their new record of collaborations, she plays the beauty to Lanegan's beast, and the place where they meet makes for a very satisfying listen."

I'm probably going to pick that disc up, just in case it's as good as it might be.

I used to think that anything Belle & Sebastian did after Tigermilk was crap, but recently (not just their new album; I've also finally discovered The Gentle Waves) I've decided it is not so.

I'm quite fond of Judy and the Dream of Horses myself.

Hey! You don't know me (though you once sent me a book I paid you for), and I was going to be all creepy and lurky here, but I wanted to pipe up and say I'm glad you've given B&S another chance. Not that we all can't have our own opinion, but mine happens to be that they're a fantastic band. Actually, I dislike the production on the new album, strangely enough. Thought "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" had nice production. But I'm glad you're enjoying it.

i agree, i dislike the production on the new one. actually i think belle and sebastian is fucking brilliant until 'fold your hands, child, you walk like a peasant'. everything after that one is awful.

i like the shitty recording and fumbly playing on the earlier stuff, but i'm not to be trusted.

Re: warning: unsolicited opinion
So many opinions! To break it down a little more, I actually think that Tigermilk and If You're Feeling Sinister are brilliant, the next two would make a decent album if you cut out half of each and made a "Fold your hands child, you walk like a boy with an arab strap" compilation, and then I absolutely loved Dear Catastrophe Waitress and am feeling indifferent to the new one.

What does it all mean??

Re: warning: unsolicited opinion
the production on the new album really really works for me. I really like the crisp loud drum sounds and the 70s AOR instrumentation, but maybe that's because it's basically the kind of music I am most fond of. Not all of the songs are great, but there are a few solid keepers and only about two songs that drive me crazy.

My old roommate used to play old B&S nonstop (both my roommates had all the singles and stuff too) and I never really tried to like them, they were just this persistently annoying mosquito-like background noise.

It may be that they have some kind of inverse graph where they get good at playing songs but their songwriting goes downhill at the same time. Or it could just be that you guys are whiny fans who like the old stuff because it touched you at the right time in your life and somehow nothing else can ever be the same!!!

Re: warning: unsolicited opinion
The new production, for me, feels muddy and indistinct. Er... So did the old, for that matter (they did record all together in a church hall), except for DCW. But it's funny to me that while they've stripped down a little instrumentally from the last album it's harder for me to hear them.

As for your previous lack of interest, that whole saturation by others thing is a common problem. I hate being told to like something, or having it forced down my ears. Like me and the Pixies; my husband's got it going on all the time. I WILL NOT LIKE IT.

Then, of course, I break down and realize I'm humming a song at work.

And I am a whiny fan, but you know, but when it's for the album of 1 1/2 years ago is, I think "nostalgia" is wrong word for it. I guess it touched my sensitive 25-year-old soul in a way my almost-27-year-old one has grown too jaded to appreciate ever again.

Damn, I'm old.

Have you read that Belle and Sabastian graphic novel thing / know what I'm talking about? I was gonna pick it up because it was pretty, but figured I didn't know enough Belle and Sabastian songs and didn't want anything lost on me.

Oh man! You're totally my biggest fan!?

I was worried about the new Belle and Sebastian album because Will said some stuff about it. I got it, though, and it turns out that I like it.

Also, I think If You're Feeling Sinister is a favorite album of mine. I listened to it a lot last year. I especially like the songs "Get me Away From Here, I'm Dying", "Dylan In The Movies", "If You're Feelng Sinister" and the one you mentioned.

I am so totally your biggest fan. my favourites are the first one and five cities later. and also "tired song".

The funny thing about that picture is that it only has 2 people, but in reality the NY Comic Con was wall-to-wall people.

not bad, not bad. ramona should be shorter and chunkier, though! (isn't it usually the other way around with cosplayers?)

i wonder if she had the star on her sidebag?
