Press release:

SAN FRANCISCO - July 28, 2009 - Ubisoft today announced the development of a video game based on Universal Pictures' upcoming action-comedy, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Co-written and directed by genre-smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead), the film stars some of Hollywood's leading young talent, including Michael Cera (Juno, Superbad), Kieran Culkin (Igby Goes Down), Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Live Free or Die Hard), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four series), Brandon Routh (Superman Returns), Mae Whitman (Arrested Development), and Jason Schwartzman (upcoming Funny People). The game is being developed by Ubisoft Montreal through a licensing agreement with Universal Partnerships & Licensing and is expected to launch worldwide with the film's 2010 release.

The live-action Scott Pilgrim vs. the World film is based on a series of award-winning graphic novels by Bryan Lee O'Malley. The series has earned numerous awards including: Entertainment Weekly's Independent Comic of the Year, Wizard's Indie Book of the Year and the Harvey Award for Humor in Comics. Published by Oni Press, the sixth and final volume in the series is set to debut in 2010 - also timed to the film release. In the film, Scott Pilgrim (Cera) has just met the girl of his dreams (Winstead), but the only catch to winning her is that her seven evil exes are coming to kill him.

"We were hooked on Scott Pilgrim from our first read of the comics and script," said Bill Kispert, Vice President, Interactive, Universal Partnerships & Licensing. "The storyline mirrors the escalating structure of a video game, and it is filled with clever homage to video game culture. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubisoft to bring fans a thoroughly entertaining interactive experience."

"We're excited to work with Universal to create a video game experience based on the Scott Pilgrim universe," said Christian Salomon, vice president of Worldwide Licensing at Ubisoft. "Scott Pilgrim is a special property, one that is both nostalgic and completely original. The game will provide a fun and unique experience to players and combine all the important elements seen in the film—action, romance, irreverent pop culture references and rock-n-roll."

"Video games have been a huge influence on the characters and world of Scott Pilgrim," said Bryan Lee O'Malley, creator of the original graphic novels. "As a gamer myself, it is a true pleasure to work closely with the talented team at Ubisoft to bring Scott to life on video game screens worldwide."

My additions:

Some of the gaming sites mentioned XBLA or PSN but they were apparently just guessing, because no platform has been announced yet.

You probably won't hear much about this game for the next few months. The game is still in the very early stages (we only officially "did the deal" in the past few weeks and it's maybe 3-4 weeks into development right now). It's going to be very cool and I'll be very involved. And there will be other exciting announcements as development rolls on.

The most important thing is that it's being made by huge fans of the books and it's a passion project for a lot of people (including me, obviously)! So just sit back and wait and every time they announce some information you'll be like "OH MY GOD WOO"

I'm soooo excited

I don't have a system so I'll have to force one of my friends with a console to buy it

Hot shit! We make games for Ubisoft all the time! In fact I am at work making art for them right now! I can't believe I didn't hear of this sooner.
SO BADASS!!

Mary Elizabeth "Ramona" Winstead is such a cutie-pie!

Congratulations! This is awesome news!

Good luck sir! If any property could be adapted into a video game well, it's definitely this one.

Looking forward to more news.

please make sure the gameplay doesn't suck please.

I'm already "OH MY GOD WOO"-ing all over the place.
I can imagine the next "OH MY GOD WOO"-s will be louder and probably better placed.

so long as your super involved with this project I will be so excited.

hell, i'll be exicted anyway, but EVEN MORE EXCITED!

congrats, this is awesome!

This becomes thing #3 on my list of Scott Pilgrim things that I can not wait for...right behind Vol. 6 and the movie. Congrats!

Basically, replace Diablo II with the Scott Pilgrim game.

Nice.

One question: Comic-style graphics, or movie-style graphics? (Or is it all still to early to spill?)

Holy Cannoli! I'm super excited about the game, and more so that you and so many other devoted folks will be involved. That will definitely make all of the difference. Woot!

Never in your wildest dreams, I bet! Congrats!

This is too awesome to be expressed in words.

Haha, dude- that's AMAZING! Congrats.

Scott Pilgrim... in the palm of my hands.. AGAIN

While it is awesome that your IP is being made into a video game, I'm worried whether it'll be based off the movie or the graphic novels, because we all know how great video games from movies end up being (very few are actually good, most are pure ASS!)

I guess my fears will not be quelled until the movie is released and we see how well they've done it..

not that it wasn't stupid

I don't know if you noticed, but the X-Men: Origins: Wolverine game was actually about forty times better than the film.

So yeah: even uninspired cash-in video games, which I am sure this will not be, can be AWESOME.

Well he's going to be very involved. So...

What about Goldeneye? That was a classic.

Most games based off movies suck because the deal's done to make them far too late, and they're timed to come out at the same time as the movie. If Scott Pilgrim's timed to come out for the movie, it's very likely to suck, as Ubisoft Montreal are not known for their ability to hit deadlines. If it's not, then it'll probably be okay.

Hoping for it to be 2D!

I caught 2-D and true to the comics in the rumor mill a couple days ago.

I want this to be for DS, but I think XBLA and PSN are the best ways for the game to be distributed.

No, scratch that. DS version with exclusive instructional manual comic drawn by BLO.

i'm already like 'oh my g--'
someone beat me to it!
but anyway, this is amazing news! even a crap game would be sorta cool, but ubisoft is a great gaming company!so it'll probably turn out really good!

This is seriously crazy (in a good way). A game based off a comic (or movie) that itself has major gaming influences. I think Ubisoft could have a lot of fun creating this thing if they make the right moves.
PS: Love the new Scott Pilgrim shirts I picked up from SDCC~!!!

Read about this on Kotaku.

I really hope they take the images for the game after Scott Pilgrim from the Comic, and they don't put Micheal Cera in the game..

Excited very much, I like~

Pixels all up in thiiiiiiiiiiiis

(I guess I mean "sprites", really.)

really really really really hoping for wii or ds here O_O

I'd hope for Wii, partly because that's the system I've got, and partly because the retro thing seems more at home there.

I'm hoping it'll be out for the DS, as I'm a luddite who is only interested in buying video games from a bricks-and-mortar store in a physical format, with a box and a manual.

Congrats.

I hope there's a mode to toggle between Scott looking like the comic and Michael Cera.

Does that mean they'll be making this in the new Ubisoft Toronto studio? ^_~

Also, I hope it'll be a music-story game. Like Parappa, maybe? XD

I don't think the Toronto studio is opening for some time. They only just announced that they were going to do it and had funding, right?

Anyway it's being done at Ubisoft Montreal.

Yeah, it was just announced earlier in the month, but the story I got was that they hoped to have something up and running by the fall. *shrug*

Montreal is cool too. Regardless, it is very cool news to have a Scott Pilgrim game coming out! :D

Saw this article on wikihow and I couldn't resist adding a new step to the instructions.

Ooh. I'm hoping for some old school brawling action. Or maybe not, but a guy can dream, right?
