KC comics

My old friend Brandon Graham's livejournal is always a good time, but today he posted something important: the first chapter of KING CITY 2.

KING CITY was my favourite graphic novel of 2007. Tokyopop put it out. You may have heard that they are having some troubles lately. They were kind of shitty about KING CITY in the first place - they almost didn't release it, thought about sticking it online-only, then changed their minds. It's since been nominated for an Eisner award.

Tokyopop is NOT publishing the second volume, but they still hold the rights and won't allow Brandon to take it to another publisher.

Anyway, he decided to put the first chapter online, kind of in a self-scanlated form. Check it out - even if you haven't read the first one. Nothing spoilery so far. And if you like it, try and grab a copy of KING CITY 1 before they're all gone. Hell, write to Tokyopop and tell them you like it and that they should print the second volume, or at least let Brandon take it elsewhere.

I bought King City months ago based on your recommendation and loved it! Although I disagree with your comments about it being at the same level as Scott Pilgrim, I've been checking various comic stores in anticipation of the second volume and had no idea it wouldn't be released until now...

2008 is defintely the year where Tokyopop is simultaneously making their shittiest business decisions and falling apart from the inside out.
Hopefully, Brandon will work something out or TP will go bankrupt and sell off all their properties like ADV did with their anime titles. Not letting him release a series they're choosing not to release themselves is just unforgivable.

You probably know about these sort of things better than I, but last I heard there was word that King City 2 was maybe getting a french release by some other company? So there's that, at least.

King City is the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot of comics.

The French Company is Bragelonne. They didn't publish comics until now, only SF and Fantasy novel. I wrote them a mail and they said they definitely were going to publish some comics, including King City. (also, they were surprised I knew it, since they haven't made any official release yet)

"Marmoset there'd be days like this." best line ever.

I'm glad to see he's getting it out one way or another. I've been really looking forward to volume 2, but had my doubts it'd ever see the light of day after all the tokyopop stuff :( Thanks for pointing this out.

I'm glad Brandon has the balls enough to release KC2 online even if TP sits on the rights. Comics for everyone!

Eugh, I knew Tokyopop was evil. I picked this up in the library the same day I found Lost at Sea. It was a good day for comics. (I later bought both.)

Thanks for the link.

Dang it. I didn't know he had a live journal. What else have you been keeping from me?

I wish TokyoPop had a face that I could spit in. They're really a bunch of burning d-bags.

Thankee for posting about this, we are going to pick it up! Drew was sold at "Catmaster general".

How do people learn to draw so good?!?

When I say "old friend" i mean he's OLD, so i assume that's why he can draw good. Anyone older than me is given free reign to draw better.

I need to pay more attention to who's on LJ. Hiya again, Mal. :)

Thanks for the link; I'll be checking this out. I like King City's look.

Yeah, I am surpemely bummed abou this, Brandon is such a kick-ass guy and his comic managed to somehow kick even further ass. Oh well, guess I could buy it in Paris-speak if only I knew how to speak that.

I sent a letter off as well. I loved the hell out of King City. I hope Brandon wins that damn award and proves what his book really deserves.

So many great books (and their creators) are being screwed by TP: King City, East Coast Rising, The Abandoned, The Dark Goodbye, etc. I want to actually write a physical letter to the company, since I know those get more attention than emails, but I can't find an address. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
