To those who have started following my blog after yesterday's shenanigans: I promise I will never be that interesting ever again.

Here's another link on the subject: Tom Spurgeon fills in some of the gaps in what I was saying. (EDIT: Heidi MacDonald has a great round-up.)

Also, remember this. Comics take time. If you're young now, time might not seem like a big deal. But if you sign up with a kinda-crappy publisher, doing a kinda-crappy book that you don't really care too much about, you'll look around one day and realize years have passed, you're not a kid anymore, and a lot of your raw potential has ossified.

(yes, before signing a book contract, think about the inevitability of death)

If you're like me, you could give a rat's ass what's in your contract, as long as you're getting to produce the work you love.

I'm no shining example. I signed whatever Oni Press put in front of me. Contract for a six-book series - I have no friggin' idea what's in there. Signed it when I was 25, and now I'm pushing 30. I'm just lucky they seem to like me and want to make money with me, rather than cutting me out of the money-making loop. Plus, they're a small outfit, and like half of them are hemophiliacs. I could totally take them in a fight.

Seriously, though, I spent years doing the invisible shit work that nobody wants to do. I lettered, I did crappy design work, I did bad inking jobs on other people's fine work. I did not win a contest and I was never an overnight success. The instant-gratification-American-Idol mindset is so sad, so damaging. Everyone I know who's successful got that way by hard work, gradual building of an audience, nonstop hustling, plenty of luck.

I have decided that what the world needs now is a new Megaman game using the original Megaman sprite - but setting him loose in a world of current pixel-technology. You know, huge bad guys, fancy visual effects, all that, but the same little guy running and zapping with his dot eyes. I just feel like he stopped being Megaman when he got more than 32 pixels high or whatever.

megaman

No one will take you on in a fight Mal, you're a towering colossus!

Hey, you've gotten four books out in three years -- and they're good! That counts you as some kind of zen master in my book.

Nah dude if he was zen master there wouldn't be any books.

As I value your opinion on everything, I can now feel good about myself. Tee hee.

I'm watching the Venture Bros - trying to finish before the new season begins this weekend. I just started on season 2, and wow does it ever get... moreso. Loving it.

it's supposed to be some kind of rockman 2 hack. not really pushing in the graphics department, though.

here's a video of heatman's stage.

See, I would say that Mega Man X was quite fun and kept some of that spirit of the older games. I do agree, however, that it would be simply bliss to have the original pixeled Mega Man kicking ass with next gen villains!

I always liked how apathetic-looking Mega Man was while doing his job. Nothing fazes that guy.

Totaly off topic but have you heard of Tokyo Pop's new Manga Pilot program? The contract looks pretty bad.

that's what he was talking about when he said "yesterday's shenanigans" because he did a breakdown of the tokyopop Manga Pilot program. :)

I did not win a contest and I was never an overnight success. The instant-gratification-American-Idol mindset is so sad, so damaging.

Not everyone who has won a contest has ridiculously high expectations of making it in this industry! *flails*

I can't speak on RSOM cause I don't know the details. But I do know one former winner who got royally fucked.

Anyway, the thing is - if I was 19 I would probably be going for the contest or the manga pilot, eager and stupid.

I just want to try and pass the things I've learned the hard way on to the next generation of idiots like me.

19? I'm 23 and I was eager and stupid! Seriously, if I hadn't read the post you made, I would've made a very, VERY big mistake. It's hard not to get caught up in things when you feel like you've just gotten your big break in the industry. I had friends beating me over the heads with 2x4s trying to get me to see how badly TPop treats their artists, but I wouldn't have any of it. It took your post to get me to finally see that they aren't looking for the next big artist, they're looking for the next gullible artist. D: Thanks so much again for your post.

Bryan, that idea about MegaMan sounds amazing. Do you know any video game people who could make it happen?

It trembles my loins to think what would happen if Megaman obtained a weapon from a 3-D boss?!

I don't know if you played through Mega Man ZX Advent, but it is possible upon completion of the game to play through it as Mega Man @, a classic NES sprite in extremely similar fashion let loose in the garish DS world.

Yeah, it's exactly what was described in the blog. Unfortunately I think you have to complete the game on hard mode, and I'm not sure anything is worth that kind of abuse.

Very much agree. A ton of things about the "Modern Day" suck balls. And pixel Megaman is the Best!

I like your Mega Man idea, but I am a sucker for anything remotely like nostalgia so it isn't surprising.

I missed all that silliness yesterday because I was playing video games and watching the silly movie 'Hot Rod'*. That was a pretty rad thing to do/type. Good work, Mr. O'Malley.

*This is my secret technique to becoming good at making comics. It is to never work on improving myself and instead waste all my time. I highly recommend it.

That's a smart looking Megaman there, sir!

Sliding is a nice addition, but they made it a gimmick in 6.

Still a fun franchise. I want more 8-bit MM

It got stale cause they were pumping them out too fast. If they put some geniuses on a new one in the old style but with new technology, it would be KILLER!

You are the coolest. You transform an industry-shakedown into a perfectly reasonable request for an awesome new nostalgic Mega Man game. And somehow, the two play into each-other.

You should post more insight into the comic book industry, maybe with more game references, or something. Shit. I don't know what you'd say tho.

"Ossified" is a freaking frightening word, though. Especially since I feel myself getting ossified or whatever lately. But I can overpower that with spaz potential.

I am friggin' ossifying too, my boy. I just happen to be in a position to make a ton of money off my current ossification.

No no.
What the world needs now, is love, sweet love.
It's the only thing that there's just too little of.

but megaman will do too.

Hey Bryan *wave*, I'm one of those new followers - and I confess it was after finding your dramatic contract breakdown....but the only reason I wasn't following you sooner was because I didn't know you were here, honest - I'm not just a drama eater ^_~

Anyways, be as non-interesting as you like - no pressure here. Hell, my LJ is entirely uninteresting these days. haha ^_^
Oh, and while I'm here, it's only fair to say I love Scott Pilgrim. Thank you for sharing his weirdness with the world!

Thanks for these past couple of posts. As one of those aspiring types, watching these American Idol-esque contests pop up left and right, it's easy to forget that most of my favorite creators (in any medium, really) had to work to get where they are. And that, even in something as relatively small as the comics biz, some companies are willing to sap the life out of you.

Imagine how many young pups you saved from becoming sucked into a bad deal like what Tokyopop is offering.

I started following your blog yesterday.. but it wasn't due to any events. :)

That megaman idea is the smartest thing I've heard anybody say in at least a month.

oh man that rockman stencil is so dope!

strictly a comment about Megaman

Man what the hell happened to Megaman X around number 4.

Do they even still make vanilla Megaman games?

More importantly: Do they still make Vanilla Ice anymore?

I'm getting kind of tired of explaining to 15 year olds that making money with the artworks takes time. I don't know who puts it into their heads that you can make ~*kawaii manga desu*~ in a few months and become wildly popular, but I want to shoot them in the face :(

Plus, they're a small outfit, and like half of them are hemophiliacs. I could totally take them in a fight.

this literally made me LOL. your posts are always a treasure.

Dream of your new 8-bit Megaman all you want. I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I want to see them do "Powered Up" versions of all the old Megaman games. It's not the graphics that made megaman great, it was the sweet, sweet music.

I just want to play all 8 Megaman games as Cut Man. :D
