kitties
Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Saw it opening night with a fairly stupid audience (sample talkback, after a tender, heart-felt outpour of emotion from Sarah Marshall: "What a bitch!"). For me, this was the most successful of the Apatow-brand comedies thus far. Lots of laughs, lots of heart, and everyone felt like a Real Person. Jason Segel is a great writer. I hope this makes him a big movie star, and that he gets to keep doing what he wants, like the Muppets or whatever. I liked that it felt more structured than the Apatow-helmed stuff, and it edged out Superbad by a long shot (which I felt spent too much time dickin' around with the cops and minor characters, not focusing on the main duo). Plus, the girl from That 70s Show has really come into her own. Man, her eyes are soooo big.

Cloverfield: I watched this on my computer. I thought it was great, and I don't understand why people got so ticked-off by it. Yeah, it was short, but it did everything it promised to do, in a really visceral way. The characters were not vapid and one-dimensional (sorry, everyone). They were believable as people in a believably unbelievable situation. Parts of it really moved me, and I was 100% along for the ride. (Note to complainers: don't take this as an invitation to pontificate on why you hated this movie, because I don't actually care)

I am reluctant to see "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" solely because of the viral-type bus ads which have been annoying the crap out of me for the past 3 weeks. Though seeing the trailer on TV last week makes it look pretty decent to watch, but I just don't want to validate that ad campaign. :p

Oh yeah, I just read SP4 finally. Thumbs up! :3

I hated Cloverfield because I never saw it, and I hate all things I haven't seen. (See also: Unicorns, Dragons, Thailand.)

I feel like Cloverfield wouldn't be as great if I saw it on a smaller screen. It wouldn't have that 'epic' feeling to it, I guess.

And people wouldn't be puking all over the theater around me.

I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night too. I thought it was hilarious. Except it was kind of hard for me to laugh because I just got through a bad break-up and like... I was the main character 3 months ago.

...Awkward...

I bet you didn't have one-night stands with as many people, though. Because that's impossible (though funny).

I saw Sarah Marshall today and was really unimpressed! I love Segel, and there were a lot of funny bits with him, Russell Brand, Paul Rudd, and Kenneth The Page, but as with pretty much everything Apatow is involved with save for Freaks and Geeks, the female characters were basically blank stick figures. I think my big problem with the movie is that they cast Kristen Bell in this thing, and she's totally wasted, they didn't really write jokes for her at all. Which is ridiculous! They could have cast any bland, pretty actress in that role and it would have been the same. Bell has a great gift for comedy, and it's just squandered in this thing.

We watched Cloverfield in our hotel room in downtown NYC last night. I thought it was perfect.

Jon Rosenberg pointed out that we really need a remake of Cloverfield from the monster's perspective.

I dug both the films.

Kudos to Segel for going balls out. It was definitely not a typical comedy, but it was still very accessible like all the Apatow produced and directed films are.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall: I never thought I would cite a Richard Roeper review, much less quote him, but this was one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. I love comedies, but I rarely laugh out loud... my wife was actually embarrassed by how loud I was guffawing.

Cloverfield: I can understand why it wouldn't be popular with the mainstream movie crowd, but it was pretty much everything I've ever wanted from a giant monster movie.

Ah geez, I didn't know these types of people also existed in Canada. I thought that kind of stupidity could only be grown right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.

Hmm, I might go see Sarah Marshall now.

I wasn't sure about it, had seen a lot of the ads for it (ESPECIALLY while I was in San Francisco for the ACA/PCA Join Conference, and NYC when I was seeing Rent)

As for Cloverfield I still need to watch it. I think people got so ticked off because they, as with so many things, built up too much for it? There was so much initial anticipation and with the ARG thing, it just seemed like it was going to be something bigger and then didn't? Also, I know a lot of people are sick of shakeycam films. Its one reason I know I didn't go see it in theaters. But I'm a huge monster buff so its still on my to watch list.

I enjoyed the heck out of Cloverfield. I think it was one of those movies that ought to be experienced on the big screen, but I'm gonna get the DVD anyway.

A couple weeks back I found myself walking up the stretch of Broadway between Canal and Houston streets, and wound up trying to figure out exactly where the Liberty's Head scene occurred based on the relative positions of the Woolworth and Crysler Buildings.

And I LOVED the marketing for Marshall
I agree %100 with you on both films (and I'm not saying that because of who you are).

I mean, Cloverfield was great! I actually cared a bit for these characters (which is hard to do with the movie being a 'video camera' movie). The only complaint I had was the lack of cursing. A lot of what made it great was the realism of the characters and fun touches (like the million cell phones taking pictures of the Liberty head etc). But no one cursed! The word, shit was uttered only three times. All so that it would be a PG-13 movie. Bah! I say! If a monster were attacking my city, I know I'd be cursing a lot more than three times. And not just shit.
But still, "Two-Thumbs up. Fine Holiday fun."

And Marshall? JUST got home from watching it. WOO HOO! I had a wonderful time, and yes, i think it's the best Appatow-related film too. And again, being a fan of realism, I LOVED the writing. Segel impressed the heck out of me. He might even make Seth Rogen's writing look like a pile o' puke!
(Just a Simpsons' quote. No offense to Rogen)

I loved "Sarah Marshall". Jason Segel did indeed write the hell out of this movie. Mila Kunis completely breaks away from her character on "That 70's Show." I didn't think I'd like Russel Brand's character. But he was funny as hell. Is it just me or does Segel remind you of Judge Reinhold but cooler. And I don't know how many times I've debated how good "Cloverfield" was.

Cloverfield was insane. It had that Blair Witch feel, and seeing it on the big screen was INTENSE. (Despite one scenario that made me roll my eyes.)

People kept walking-out, though...

JJ Abrams said that "there were many people with cameras in Manhattan that night"... take that as you will.

Agreed, I had a really fun time at both of those movies. Before FSM we got the Pineapple Express trailer, which I was unaware of, and I'm excited for that one now too! But immediately after it we got a trailer for this godawful-looking Jason Biggs/Dane Cook flick called "My Best Friend's Girl". After P.Express, it looked even crappier than it would already normally appear. I wanted to yell at the screen, "Dane Cook please go away and stand behind a cash register at a Radio Shack somewhere." He'd do far less harm there, I think.

I LOVED CLOVERFIELD :) i managed to get tickets the first screening in the uk so everyone who was there was going to see this film purely because they were excited about it and not because they had been dragged along, so there were lots of claps and lots "whooaaaoooas" :)

yet to see FSM but it looks ok from the trailer.

I think Cloverfield will get more love in video release because the handheld approach just doesn't work on the big screen, especially when you're sitting right at the front of one of those Famous Players monstrosities. Motion sickness = FAIL. The movie or me, I'm not quite sure.

cloverfield was aite... there was a leaked preliminary concept drawing of the monster online that looked like a walking blue whale or something, which was way cooler than the actual monster in the movie.
