Forgetting Sarah Marshall: Saw it opening night with a fairly stupid audience (sample talkback, after a tender, heart-felt outpour of emotion from Sarah Marshall: "What a bitch!"). For me, this was the most successful of the Apatow-brand comedies thus far. Lots of laughs, lots of heart, and everyone felt like a Real Person. Jason Segel is a great writer. I hope this makes him a big movie star, and that he gets to keep doing what he wants, like the Muppets or whatever. I liked that it felt more structured than the Apatow-helmed stuff, and it edged out Superbad by a long shot (which I felt spent too much time dickin' around with the cops and minor characters, not focusing on the main duo). Plus, the girl from That 70s Show has really come into her own. Man, her eyes are soooo big.
Cloverfield: I watched this on my computer. I thought it was great, and I don't understand why people got so ticked-off by it. Yeah, it was short, but it did everything it promised to do, in a really visceral way. The characters were not vapid and one-dimensional (sorry, everyone). They were believable as people in a believably unbelievable situation. Parts of it really moved me, and I was 100% along for the ride. (Note to complainers: don't take this as an invitation to pontificate on why you hated this movie, because I don't actually care)

Oh yeah, I just read SP4 finally. Thumbs up! :3
And people wouldn't be puking all over the theater around me.
I saw Forgetting Sarah Marshall last night too. I thought it was hilarious. Except it was kind of hard for me to laugh because I just got through a bad break-up and like... I was the main character 3 months ago.
...Awkward...
the part in the tunnel had me going "fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck"
Jon Rosenberg pointed out that we really need a remake of Cloverfield from the monster's perspective.
Kudos to Segel for going balls out. It was definitely not a typical comedy, but it was still very accessible like all the Apatow produced and directed films are.
Cloverfield: I can understand why it wouldn't be popular with the mainstream movie crowd, but it was pretty much everything I've ever wanted from a giant monster movie.
Ah geez, I didn't know these types of people also existed in Canada. I thought that kind of stupidity could only be grown right here in the good ol' U.S. of A.
I wasn't sure about it, had seen a lot of the ads for it (ESPECIALLY while I was in San Francisco for the ACA/PCA Join Conference, and NYC when I was seeing Rent)
As for Cloverfield I still need to watch it. I think people got so ticked off because they, as with so many things, built up too much for it? There was so much initial anticipation and with the ARG thing, it just seemed like it was going to be something bigger and then didn't? Also, I know a lot of people are sick of shakeycam films. Its one reason I know I didn't go see it in theaters. But I'm a huge monster buff so its still on my to watch list.
A couple weeks back I found myself walking up the stretch of Broadway between Canal and Houston streets, and wound up trying to figure out exactly where the Liberty's Head scene occurred based on the relative positions of the Woolworth and Crysler Buildings.
I mean, Cloverfield was great! I actually cared a bit for these characters (which is hard to do with the movie being a 'video camera' movie). The only complaint I had was the lack of cursing. A lot of what made it great was the realism of the characters and fun touches (like the million cell phones taking pictures of the Liberty head etc). But no one cursed! The word, shit was uttered only three times. All so that it would be a PG-13 movie. Bah! I say! If a monster were attacking my city, I know I'd be cursing a lot more than three times. And not just shit.
But still, "Two-Thumbs up. Fine Holiday fun."
And Marshall? JUST got home from watching it. WOO HOO! I had a wonderful time, and yes, i think it's the best Appatow-related film too. And again, being a fan of realism, I LOVED the writing. Segel impressed the heck out of me. He might even make Seth Rogen's writing look like a pile o' puke!
(Just a Simpsons' quote. No offense to Rogen)
People kept walking-out, though...
JJ Abrams said that "there were many people with cameras in Manhattan that night"... take that as you will.
yet to see FSM but it looks ok from the trailer.
Cloverfield.
