Awards season: I've been nominated for a National Cartoonist Society "Reuben" Award, in the Comic Books category, for Scott Pilgrim Gets It Together. This is astonishing. Recent winners in this category: JEFF SMITH, DON PERLIN, ALEX ROSS, CHRIS WARE, DAN DeCARLO, FRANK CHO, STAN SAKAI, TERRY MOORE, DARWYN COOKE, PAUL CHADWICK. This is big, scary stuff. Will Eisner won, like, eight of these things.

Movie stuff: Michael Cera gushes a little here.

How I Met Michael Cera: Mr Edgar Wright, his brother Oscar, cowriter Michael Bacall and I met up in Toronto in June 2007. We were talking about the script, I was showing them the original locations, etcetera. We went to the CN Tower and then we met with Michael Cera. We ate sushi and saw Live Free Or Die Hard. (When you hang out with Edgar Wright, you will be watching movies.) I was passing around some pages from Vol 4 while we waited for the movie to come on. The Superbad trailer played, and people around us were like "oh my god it's that guy".

Anyway, that's all. Since then, I think he's been making movies like every single day. And the casting took a year to go from a gleam in Edgar's eye to an on-paper reality.

Also, all my pictures from that Toronto trip are like, neighbourhood cats and funny signs. I have not once in my life taken a picture of Edgar Wright or anyone else involved with the film, mostly due to oversight on my part.

I am excited for you and Scott Pilgrim.
but,

ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT THE MOVIE!!??

I told Eric [Kim] that if the movie was shot in Toronto it would be great if you could sneak as many of your friends in comics into cameo roles (like a scene at the Toronto Public Library!). But it'll probably just be Chris and a sly shot of the Beguiling.

I'm so there. We'd totally be extras or something and we'd get everyone to come to Toronto for the weekend. It would be this huge reunion of 1998.

Congrats on the om nom nomination. XD

Congrats on the National Cartoonists nomination. Maybe you'll go to the award show and hobnob with Mel Lazarus.

Haha, he's a fan!

Every time I see Cera interviewed somewhere, he reminds me of all the lovely and talented drama nerds I hung out with in high school. It's nice to see one of those lovely and talented drama nerds making it big. I think he'll rock Scott.

I f'ing made that! Symmetry!

postscript. Congratulations! On everything!

Michael stopped by my comic shop in Austin TX for a premiere of Superbad, and he bought a copy of Scott Pilgrim while he was there ^_^! My manager was a huge fan of Arrested Development and had his picture taken with him, and Cera was pointing to the book and giving a 'thumbs up!' When I found out he was cast for the movie I was so psyched. It seems perfect~

Holy moley!! It's my boss! XD It's so cool you found this!

Someone posted that here in my comments sometime in the first half of 2007. I have it on my flickr here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/radiomaru/508584117/

That was definitely a few months before there were any rumblings of his involvement with the film.

Congrats on the NCS nomination! I'm sure it seems astonishing to you, sir, but as a reader it makes much sense. I recently re-read the series so far and I think SP4 achieved a new level of grandeur.

Congrats on everything.
And I'm glad Cera is actually a fan. That means he'll do his best to play up the role. :p

I'm thinkin' the movie'll be super fun and that the exposure will get even more readers.
There's nothin' I like better than when awesome people get money for being awesome :)

I nominate Dan Savage to play Mr. Wallace Wells.:D

There must be someone gay in Toronto who's under forty.

congrats on the nomination Mal!

Damn, you are made of at least 4.3 zillion kinds of awesome. Congratulations!

Oh man. I have been quietly freaking out about all of this as the news rolled up on my friends page. I've been trying to hold it in and not be so square as to reply to every post with "OMG! I <3 SCOTTPILGRIM FOREVAAAAR!!", but the time has come... Please pardon the next couple of sentences while I fan-gush all over your hot update (was that inappropriate?).

I know a million people will say this, but I recall telling my friends that it would be a dream to see Cera as Pilgrim. Edgar Wright is seemingly the perfect director for this and I couldn't be happier for you. As an aspiring (yet motivationally crippled) comic creator from Canada, your success lights a fire under me. You might as well put your signature on the generation you define so well. We are not worthy.

Okay. Deep breaths. Sorry about that. Anyway, good on you and congratulations on everything. I hate to miss you at the Calgary Expo but I understand your situation (my gramma recently went through the citizenship thing). Hope the good times keep rolling and I can't wait for the next book.

congrats on the nomination, man!! you deserve it.

Oh, congrats! I may be at the Reubens this year. I will wear a fancy dress and golf clap for you. I may NOT be there though. The fates, they have yet to decide these things. But I'll hope!

A well deserved nomination

That nomination is pretty sweet.
