Television rules the nation
Movie news: I guess Universal publicists put in an update at IMDB. Now it says the title is SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, which I must tell you is the accurate current title of the film. It may change in the future, but I'm pretty sure every draft I've seen has had that title on it.

I think it's an appropriate title for a done-in-one version of the story, don't you?

Anime: I watched that first episode of Macross Frontier, which I guess debuted in December (the full series begins in Japan later this week). It was awesome. Really. I was impressed. It got me unexpectedly excited. I've always liked Macross/Robotech... stories about huge numbers of people drifting in space do something for me, I guess. (I got it here.)

Video games: I started playing Etrian Odyssey (for DS), which I had been hyped about back when it was announced, but then I forgot about it! Anyway, it's pretty cool so far, in a curiously Eye of the Beholder-kinda way, but with adorable character art.

Music: I am rediscovering Daft Punk's Human After All, which most of us dismissed back in '05. Somehow it has improved with age (and with the release of Alive 2007, not to mention the Justice album). Good inking music, maybe.

Books: We are listening to Into the Wild in audiobook format, speaking of inking music. I haven't seen the movie, although I agree that Emile Hirsch is handsome. The book is pretty good. Somehow we keep listening to books about Man's Folly.

I'm disappointed for who they picked for Scott, currently. I mean, I know he's a star now after being in "Juno", but I still picture him as the wimpy kid from "Arrested Development". I don't really look at him and see Scott, it's disappointing, and that actor generally has a certain voice and demeanor to him that it almost the opposite of Scott.

Oh well, I'm sure it will work out. ;D Congrats on the movie stuff though, I'm sure it's just amazing to see how it progresses.

Remember: this will get people in the door to see Scott. Also! Remember what George Michael did to GOB in the final episode.

I understand why and I remember but he wouldn't have been my first choice, but hey! I never know, he could probably be the best Scott ever! I'll just have to wait and see. ^^;

Good title! You can't get much bigger than the world.

Human After All is good, the live sets floating around are damn near remarkable.

i have a question about the movie...

did edgar wright consult you on what the later evil exes would be like? is the gideon (assuming they are using him) for the movie the same as the one that will be in the comic? and not just the exes, but considering your comic isnt done, did he ask you what major things you planned on using for your comic that he should include in the film version?

and Human After All still isnt all that amazing to me. Discovery had such well done songs, i really liked how it was house music but with structure, but then Human After All is kindof like.. a bunch of 5 minute loops. but its better than nothing, and Alive 2007 does improve on it quite a bit.

It seems like a cross between 7 and Plus, tonally, which I can live with. The character designs are a bit bland, but the setting and the 3D animation are incredible.

Of all the book titles, I thought that one would be the most appropriate too.

Also, how much veto do you have over things? Or is that secret, contracty stuff?

I didn't know Macross F was out yet. Nice.

It's not my movie. Why would I have any veto power?

I don't want it to be animated. I don't want it to be Sin City. I'm not a filmmaker or a screenwriter.

For the record, I thought Sin City was a terrible movie.

I just thought that you might be able to say "no" if, for example, they changed his music style to rap, gave him a talking dog sidekick, changed Ramona into a twiggy international supermodel, and had him battle her seven evil exes in an MTV breakdancing arena.

If "they" suddenly pulled a switcheroo and did all that, then no, I think it'd be far past the point of me saying they had to stop. I agreed to their creative choices and signed all the contracts three years ago. I think it's only if Edgar Wright bailed out that we could pull the plug.

FORTUNATELY, he's not a fucking asshole.

Edgar Wright made two of my favourite movies ever, so I have quite a bit of faith in him for this one. It's just that the Hollywood ecosystem is a vast foodchain of conflicting egos, and comic books get butchered quite often, so I was a slight bit concerned. Not really anymore, though.

People were appalled by Human After All because it didn't sound like "One More Time." Then, years later, people remembered that, oh yeah, "One More Time" is kind of a not-that-great song and Robot Rock is way better.

That is my analysis, anyway.

or it could be that Discovery had songs with actual song structure like "Digital Love," "Face to Face," and "Harder Better Faster Stronger," unlike songs off Human After All like "Make Love," and "Television Rules The Nation" which are literally 4+ minute loops that change slightly over every 48 phrases.

Eh. I have to admit I kinda thought Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was a weak title even for the book. Of the four, "vs. the World" is the most generic. That's not to say it isn't an appropriate title for the movie, it's just not as unique as I was expecting it would be. I was hoping for "Scott Pilgrim Levels Up" or something. Even just "Scott Pilgrim" I'd prefer, as I imagine if people see the movie and want to read the comic they'd mistakenly start with book 2.

Human After All is a weird Daft Punk album. It sounds great live, but it just sounds unfinished on the album. Have you seen them live? Listening to their live set is just half the experience. You must see them rock out in their robot suits on top of that pyramid.

Good call on Justice as well. Album of the year for last year...other than Sound of Silver.

I have thoughts on all your thoughts! (Creepy? U decide!)

Anime: Have you watched Kung Fu Love? I just found it last week, but man, it is blowing my mind. I don't even really know what is going on half the time, but I am going to steal shots from it on the regular to turn into panels.

ALSO: The remake/"reinvention" of Battlestar Galactica is a pretty good example of the 'drifting in space' genre. Or at least I think it is. I was super-stoned on painkillers when I watched most of it, and so my memory of the first two seasons are a little fuzzy.

Video Games: I haven't played Etrian Odyssey because I don't have time for dungeon crawlers that don't also feature Pokemon anymore. But yeah, I'd probably buy an artbook for E.O. pretty quickly. It is ridiculously slick. They have made some pretty neat looking toys for it as well. (Naturally they are only the female classes)

Music: Man, I listen to terrible music now.

Books: Man, I read terrible books now.

That title works well for the whole lot, however Cena's gonna have to have a pretty huge grin on the poster to make that work ;)

It's sad that people never accept an artist's changing needs.

Even Discovery was widely panned when it first came out. Hell, even I passed on it for the first year or so. "One More time" sounded like a pale retread of "Music Sounds Better With You" when I first heard it.

Change = death for fans
and no change = death for the artist
and never the twain shall meet

Of all the people I know who dig Daft Punk, the vast majority don't like Discovery, and I loved the thing from start to finish, even more than Homework, which is a masterpiece in it's own right. Considering the change in between those albums, I expected a change in between albums. I love Daft Punk to death, so I'm fine with that. Most of Human After All has a very good base to it. I love the title track and Robot Rock (until it gets old after two minutes), but they only took six weeks to produce it. I sort of like the album, but I would've liked it better if they took another six months to expand on what sounded like some wonderful musical ideas.

I think everyone is judging Cera a little too harshly. I mean, at first, I was way excited because I like him a lot (which was totally biased and blind, i know). But a good friend of mine had the opposite reaction (like most the posters here) and he had his reasons (which were like most the posters here).

Cera keeps being judged by the characters he's played (actually, he's been %90 judged on Arrested)- which in a way, is valid. But thing is, the guy's an actor. He shouldn't be judged by his characters' tendencies. It's totally unfair (besides, Arrested was about five years ago, right?). I mean, his character in Superbad was a nice step away from George-Michael. "But he was still, timid and blah blah blah" my friend said. Well, yeah, when he was talkin with a GIRL! Most adolescent boys are like that! But when he was just interacting with his friends, he wasn't timid at all! [which was great to see Cera finally do] And I don't think one can use his character in Juno much because his character was in like %10 of the film and when he was, he didn't leave that big of an impression either way. I remember he loved those orange Tic-Tacs though (which i love as well).
If you don't think Cera can pull Scott P off, that opinion should be based on your opinion of Cera's acting ability.
I think it's a little obvious that, in my opinion, I think he may be able to pull it off. But of course, that's just me :)

I guess we'll see.
