Here's what happens

The Hollywood Reporter prints a story hastily sent in by someone's publicist. Nobody fact-checks anything. The rest of the internet / world hastily copies the facts in the article into their own hastily-published articles. It's amazing!

Anyway, I can "confirm" that Michael Cera is going to play Scott Pilgrim in this movie adaptation.

It is not called "Scott Pilgrim's Little Life", as the whole internet has been saying. Gee, I wonder why they took out "precious", the internet wonders? Maybe because some idiot made an error while filing the story? No, couldn't be. There must be some deeper meaning.

It isn't even called Precious Little Life, but I defer to the film's creators as to when and how they want to make their announcements.

Yes, there is a screenplay (sorry, imdb). I can tell you that I read the first draft in March 2006, and the second draft was submitted in October, just before the writer's strike. Michael Bacall and Edgar Wright co-wrote it. Edgar Wright is directing the film.

Any script reviews you've seen online were probably of the first (2006) draft.

Yes, the studio (Universal) is "eyeing a fall start".

Yes, it is based on the entire story arc, not just the first book, and yes we talked a lot about what should happen in the later parts of the story, but at the same time we have already diverged significantly. It is a complimentary story, not an exact copy.

Yes, Edgar Wright is a fine fellow who has included me since the very start (late '04 / early '05).

Blah, blah, blah.

I honestly had no idea this was going to be announced this week. I am in LA for no reason connected to this movie thing. We just came out here for fun!

As I am Unimportant, I seriously doubt many people care what I have to say on this subject, but there you have it. The truth as it stands, for my readers.

Reminder: I am signing at Meltdown tomorrow from 2-4 PM. Los Angeles.

Good to know that the Movie story deviates from the comics, I totally wasn't expecting that choice for the role of Scott. Though, whatever happens happens in that big system eh... I think Edgar Wright is a good sign though... (It says precious on the IMDB page now you've probably noticed) Do anything interesting in LA, I've never been out there?

WELCOME TO HOLLYWOOD. 8)

It'll be like Death Note or Akira, with a totally different twist ending!!!!

I've only seen Michael Cera in Arrested Development. I suppose since he's an actor, he can act more Scott-like for this role, as opposed to being hilariously awkward.

You should see Juno and Superbad. I'm a little concerned that he CAN'T do anything besides be hilariously awkward.

If I had an announcement like this to make, I'd probably draw an autobiographical comic about it, and write the rest of the post in blazing golden font, and mark it as the most important news you'll ever read. But you mark stuff like this as "boring", "too much information". You're such a professional teacherman, with your teacher's textbook on how to make incredible comics (with all the answers in the back!). I don't get how you do it. Sometimes I try to cut out the flakey butteryness of regular-people-type conversation, and just tell the world how my life is, as it is. But I just sound like a poseur douche. There could be some philosophical reason to it, like, maybe that's just what happens when you put out 5 successful graphic novels-- or maybe you were just born a pro teacherman, and I was born a douche.

Iawe;fhaw;foehwa I am so excited for this! I think Michael Cera is a pretty good choice to portray Scott. He's got that whole Scott thang going on. Ahh I wanna know the rest of the cast!

Haha yeah I read a copy of the hollywood reporter article in a myspace bulletin posted by ONI PRESS of all people to post a slightly innacurate article about their own book. But it's good to know that the things that I got all excited about are the things that are still true. Which are basically Edgar Wright and Michael Cerra. I mean hey he may not be a carbon copy of Scott but at least he's actually Canadian? Haha whatever that's worth.

Haha you're totally important. Infact, I wouldn't be suprized if you win a Harvey this year. Your book is basically the only one Ross could think of when trying to decide Harvey nominees.

It's excellent news to hear about Micahel, but minor inaccuracies floating around the Internet hardly seem worth interrupting a vacation. I'd sooner be amused than concerned. Enjoy your vacation.

I'm going to make the grand assumption that whatever happens in this movie, it won't be set in Canada. Oh well.

Everything almost seems to be going too well with this project. I have no doubt this movie will be enjoyable, but I'm honestly kind of afraid that it might overshadow the original comic.

is this going to be a movie that you'll just want to rent it or something, like how the series of unfortunate events movie(man, that movie sucked, and made the books bad)?

It took a little while for the choice of Cera to grow on me. But now I'm really excited about the choice. I loved him on "Arrested Development" and I think he's gotten a bit pidgeon-holed as an actor. A role like Scott would be a good step for him.

I'm also glad the movie will be doing it's own thing. It's a different beast so that only makes sense.

As much as i love Michael Cera, I just can't seem him playing Scott. Scott is aloof, yes, but he's also a bit of a dick. Cera seems a little too doe-eyed. But hey, maybe I'll be pleasantly proven wrong!

Soooooo exciting!!! I hadn't heard about that article or whatever, but I'm really glad you hear it from you first, that way THE FACTS ARE STRAIGHT, YO.

I haven't seen any of Cera's movies, but I've at least heard about the roles he played, so I think he would AT LEAST be a decent Scott. On this note, I am going to have to check out Juno and Superbad.

This news is AWESOOOOOOOME. Congrats Bryan!!! Hope you're having fun in cali. And you keep those people in line!! D:

At first I was like, "THIS guy is playing Scott Pilgrim"?:

But then I realized, oh, CERA, not CENA.

Anyway, your post answered my big question: Would it be based on the whole series, or the first book. So, Question 2: Will it spoil the rest of the books before they have a chance to be released?

But man, it NEEDS to be filmed on-location.
