Going, going
We are off to Vermont to experience the Center for Cartoon Studies. It's a college for cartoonists! What I fear this means is that all the students will know more than me and be better-equipped for the real world. Oh well, at least I'm rich and powerful. Anyway, we will speak to the students and hopefully see what it's all about.

I found out one of our forthcoming convention trips has to be canceled, sadly, but I can't say which just yet. I'll have to leave you in suspense until next week. :(

Oh, I've read about that college! It sounds so great. Haha, I actually read about it in Shojo Beat.

I wonder what it's like... I wanna hear more about it. I just looked at the admissions page and the limit for the incoming class is 20 students!

Part of the application:

"A minimum two page comic story starring yourself, a snowman, and a robot. You may combine characters! Format may be a zine, mini-comic, plain black and white copies, or an online comic. Crisp legible reproduction is a must. Non-returnable."

None of my college applications were that fun :\

They have a really great informational brochure done by Kevin Huizenga.

Maybe I'll try and do a full report when I get back! I'm bringing my camera.

I was thinking about applying there for a Master's after (when! if!) I finish this awful Sociology degree. It is a lot of money and I would have to move to Vermont, though.

Also I have this terrible fear it would be all of my favorite cartoonists telling me how awful I am all day every day.

Hey... I go to that school.

It's nothing that bad- all the great cartoonists are very encouraging! What I have to face every day is 19 other people who are all cartoonists wondering if THEY suck while I worry if I suck. There's great camaraderie in it, that way.

And I definitely suck less now than I did when I started.

Oh! My friend taught some sort of class there awhile ago! You don't know Brendan Burford by any chance, do you?

That is to say, I guess he taught a seminar. Or something. I mean, I wasn't there, so I can't be trusted.

A college like that exists?! Incredible. Which kind of brings me to the question--did you ever get an art related degree?

I often think about moving just to attend a quality art college, but you really don't need to graduate from such to be successful in the arts, do you? Just a question from an aspiring artist with a light wallet.

I guess it would be comparable to my assumption when I started at NSCAD, that kids who had come from "art" high schools in Ontario would have substantially better portfolios and early work than those of us from regular schools. But you know, I couldn't tell the difference.

Likewise, I see equally accomplished cartoonists who attended art college, a specialty art college (like CCS), or are entirely self-taught. What really matters is one's own continuously-developing skills, ideas, and perseverance.

That's the school I'm going to next year!

(provided America-land lets me into the country)

I hope you'll post a report--my husband is thinking of attending (though we're still trying to figure out that whole accreditation thing) as he is tired of teaching high school art and then coming home to work on his comic every day.

Have a good trip Bryan, we're looking forward to meeting you and Hope! (And worry not about the knowledge and experience thing, we're all polite hosts and will nod encouragingly regardless).

What is that "real world" thing you mentioned?
