kitties
Shojo Beat asked me to do a little something for their Art Issue, which hits newsstands etc on February 21st (and is out to subscribers already, I'm told). I drew them a Beat Girl for their cover, and I also did a little 4-panel yonkoma-style strip, an interview, and a "How I drew the cover" tutorial piece. Tons of content! Great manga, too! Look for it soon!

Shojo Beat Feb 08

As well as Nana (the best thing ever), Shojo Beat also puts out one of mine and Hope's new favorite manga: BEAUTY POP by Kiyoko Arai! I realize these shojo titles can kind of blur together after a while... flower this, beauty that, something pop, but this is the one about the best hairdresser in Japan!! I urge you to start picking it up. Six volumes now, seventh soon.

Side note: February 21st is also my birthday. I'm a Pisces, meaning I'm creative, introverted, overly sensitive, passive-aggressive, irritable, etcetera.

I've been writing little articles for Shonen Jump since the beginning of last year, and it's been very nice. The people at both titles are tremendous.

I actually couldn't remember the official adjectives for a Pisces, so I pulled most of them out of my ass.

Dude, as a fellow Zooey fan, I thought I might share this with you:

http://the-happening--trailer.blogspot.com/

The Happening stars her beautiful self and lucky Marky Mark Whalberg as two sane people living in a world where plants have gotten pissed at humans and started releasing neuro-toxins into the atmosphere which make people go mental and kill themselves.

Supercool.

Happy early birthday! I'm a libra, which means that I sleep in too late, and put my feet up on the furniture, but when times are tough I'll step in and do the dishes.

Oh shit- for the first time in my life, I'd consider buying an issue of Shoujo Beat because I like that cover so much.

You didn't consider buying the Princess Knight issue?! ... Which I think I lost?

I bought that issue and was sooo disappointed to learn that they weren't actually serializing it. I guess I'm lucky to have the bilingual version.

I'm pretty much burned out on shojo these days, but I'll check this issue out.

Dude, what's with that 9 must have art tools thing on the cover, are 5 of those fingers, and gravity and air? I can't think of 9.

I heard that nana was gonna have to stop being serialized in that book once it catches up to some of the harsher story lines.

also, stripes=gold.

They already stopped with Nana, but they're still printing the books obviously. Beauty Pop is just in books too.

I can't think of 9 must-have tools either.

The other day at the store I saw this How-to-draw-manga kit that came with a "cartooning pen"... man I wish I had a cartooning pen. I've really been missing out.

I love it!! I can't wait for this issue to come in the mail. Also, I want to know more about this 'Japanese Curry Extravagnza.' I love Indian curries, so hopefully the Japanese ones are good and spicy, too.

P.S. How do you 'get her look'?
[info]destroyerzooey wrote:

Oh, they have something about her clothes or whatever... like, the shoes (which you can't fully see on the cover) are from a real store... blah blah..

Japanese curry is not very spicy, but it can be very tasty. I made some recently. It's more like a beef stew with curry flavoring added, and you usually eat it with white rice.

NANANANANA! that was my way of expressing my love for Nana.

Also, the cover looks awesome. I'm pretty stoked to pick up this sucker,

I originally picked up Nana cause I remembered reading somewhere you said you liked it, or that it was sort of an influence on Scott Pilgrim, or something. Anyway, now I am hooked and they can't release the books fast enough.

Congrats Mal! I'll keep an eye out in Chapters. I only wish that Shojo Beat came with all the extra presents and such that the Japanese comics come with. And Send-ins. Oooh.

I'm also keen on reading the article on how to get a career in video game design. XD

That reminds me, I need to finish reading Nana. I kind of was in the middle of it and then I saw that movie adaptation... :p

I was going to enter their Beat Girl contest but I never did because I'm lame like that...and I sorta suck at coming up with unique styles for girls. >_>

Dyaaahhhh I was wondering when you were going to post about this! I got mine in the mail yesterday and I took one glance at the cover and I was like "WHAT?!"

Honestly though, I'm getting really sick of Shojo Beat. I feel like the magazine is totally turning me off to shojo manga! It's all the same; the main characters are all clones, the love interests are all the same, it's getting incredibly monotonous. Don't even get me started on Absolute Boyfriend... I'm pissed that they stopped serializing Nana, because that manga was pretty refreshing. I should start reading the tankobon... The only reason I'm holding onto my subscription is the sheer adorableness of Honey and Clover.

YOUR COVER IS AWESOME THOUGH! I enjoyed reading the process segment in the back.

Woo!

Oh man, I'm getting the same way with SB. The only manga I really read is Honey and Clover in there, I just skip all the rest. (I'm really glad that this issue's Absolute Boyfriend was the last ever, no more of that!)And even boring ones are ending, they're getting replaced with clones! It's really starting to bother me.

I agree. I love NANA, Absolute Boyfriend, and now Honey + Clover, but the only other title close to interesting is Crimson Hero.

I just got that today in the mail, and I literally screamed I was excited/surprised.

I just recently (a few months ago) got into Beauty Pop also, I like it alot! I love that sort of thing where the main character girl actually has some sort of goal (other just having a boyfriend or giant floating flowers revolving around her, that is.)

I find Nana alittle overrated, but I only read a single issue.
Still I'm buying this because I heart MAL and more interviews from you seem worth the price. And I enjoy SB alot more than SJ anyways recently. So yeha, I'm picking this up for sure! And Happy Birthday incase there's no bday entry!XD

You're college-course material
Just thought I'd let you know, Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life is being used in a First-Year Seminar at Bowdoin College called "English 022 - Of Comics and Culture." It's a great example of modern comics!

This URL may get you to the Blackboard site for the class: http://blackboard.bowdoin.edu/webapps/portal/frameset.jsp?tab=courses&url=%2Fbin%2Fcommon%2Fcourse.pl%3Fcourse_id%3D_5492_1
