You should buy the new Spoon album this week, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. A friend at Merge was nice enough to give me a sneak peek but I'll be buying it ASAP. Spoon is one of my favourite bands right now. The New York Times says of Britt Daniel: "He sounds like a British guy with a Southern accent and a cold, which means he sounds like a rock star, only more so."
As to another S-band that is releasing an album this week, I'm torn between actually buying it or just stealing it, because in a lot of ways I could care less about the current exploits of Mr Corgan. I know I kind of semi-named a book after them and stuff, but seriously. I am dreading the rest of this summer in which all the teenyboppers at the mall are listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. It's like Weezer in 2001 all over again. The single is not bad but I anticipate the album with quiet dread.
We saw the Fiery Furnaces last night (opening: Dios Malos) and that was weird. I kind of wish sometimes they would just play a song like normal people, but I guess that is not to be. I like them, but they're frustrating. Matt F was manning the merch table like an indie cartoonist at the types of things I go to. Eleanor's confident strut makes the band work even when they're playing completely atonal deconstructions of songs that were pretty obtuse to start with.
Anyway, I guess I'm back for a bit. I will post occasionally over the remainder of the summer.

BEAUTIFUL MAN
If the album isn't any good does it make you a curmudgeon for ignoring it? I tend to forget Weezer did anything after Pinkerton, and I'm beginning to forget Grandaddy did anything more than a couple songs.
Makes for a great background soundtrack if you want to listen to something heavy, but don't actually want any distractions.
I've enjoyed the new Spoon album. I appreciate their consistency, but I think they need fill out their sound a little. I'm growing tired of minimalism and maximumismism (notaword)
I completely agree with you about Fiery Furnaces. I kept liking one element out of there songs and then the rest of it's like "Oh, I guess this isn't going to be a melody anymore"
Mal, I think it's time to listen to Big Star if you haven't already. It feels right.
Reminds me of when we got the Queens of the Stone Age CD in (the one after the one Dave Grohl did the drums on) when I worked at Hot Topic (yes, eternal shame is mine). When we played it, I swore it wasn't Grohl on the drums. No one believed me. I finally dug out the CD insert and I was right.
Really good musicians seem to have very distinct play styles. I never really noticed Iha's work with SP and now I realize it was because he fit so well.
I've got some pretty good pictures of that show up on my flickr account (flickr.com/photos/south_) if anyone's interested.
Sorry to hijack your comments; delete if you must, but thought you might enjoy this:
Hey, anyone who saw the movie, did you see a trailer for the new J. J. Abrams movie codenamed 'Cloverfield'? I just caught it online - MAN A-FREAKIN-LIVE.... What a trailer!

I like Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga though. Took me a while to really get into it in the wake of the greatness that was Gimmie Fiction. If this doesn't get them some attention from listeners I don't know what will.

I listened to Green Day (sort of) in high school, long long ago. I was shocked when they became popular with the kiddies again a couple of years back. Same sorta thing.
(i saw them live 3 times and they were good, but didn't do any of that famous 3-hour silverfuck jam stuff)
Been a fan ever since. It sucks that I never got to see them live while I was living in Austin.
They have a new video for "The Underdog" that I saw the other day. Nothing like this one, but it's a cute deconstruction of their sound.
This all got me thinking about other Austin bands. If you're at all into shoegazer type music might want to check out http://www.experimentalaircraft.com/
By the way, did you get my email several months back about the domain names I want to give you? I was just some dumb spur of the moment thing. If you don't want them that's cool. I'll just keep them pointed at the Scott Pilgrim site.
I feel the same way about the fiery furnaces.
And as for the pumpkins new album, I'm not too excited.
If you do your own SP mix CD, post it -- I'll post mine. Their catalog is so huge that getting it on 1 CD is hard.
I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it down to one disc either. I think I should, though. It's a noble challenge. So many of them will be b-sides, I bet.
