A post about music

You should buy the new Spoon album this week, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. A friend at Merge was nice enough to give me a sneak peek but I'll be buying it ASAP. Spoon is one of my favourite bands right now. The New York Times says of Britt Daniel: "He sounds like a British guy with a Southern accent and a cold, which means he sounds like a rock star, only more so."

As to another S-band that is releasing an album this week, I'm torn between actually buying it or just stealing it, because in a lot of ways I could care less about the current exploits of Mr Corgan. I know I kind of semi-named a book after them and stuff, but seriously. I am dreading the rest of this summer in which all the teenyboppers at the mall are listening to the Smashing Pumpkins. It's like Weezer in 2001 all over again. The single is not bad but I anticipate the album with quiet dread.

We saw the Fiery Furnaces last night (opening: Dios Malos) and that was weird. I kind of wish sometimes they would just play a song like normal people, but I guess that is not to be. I like them, but they're frustrating. Matt F was manning the merch table like an indie cartoonist at the types of things I go to. Eleanor's confident strut makes the band work even when they're playing completely atonal deconstructions of songs that were pretty obtuse to start with.

Anyway, I guess I'm back for a bit. I will post occasionally over the remainder of the summer.

oh man I know that feeling...I was so excited for the new Weezer back then...and was sadly disappointed shortly after its release...hopefully Smashing Pumpkins won't fall into that same trap...

Yeah, that new Spoon album is freaking fantastic, and Underdog is a flawless song.

If the album isn't any good does it make you a curmudgeon for ignoring it? I tend to forget Weezer did anything after Pinkerton, and I'm beginning to forget Grandaddy did anything more than a couple songs.

The new SP album is kind of meh. Not bad, by any means, but imagine if they played Cherub Rock over and over for an hour, and that's pretty much it. That and the production blows. Great job on the drums, which is nice because Chamberlain is a monster, and the vocals sit well in the mix, but everything else is mush. Extra sad, because the new bass chick sounds great live.

Makes for a great background soundtrack if you want to listen to something heavy, but don't actually want any distractions.

I sort of thought Billy Corgan was going to stop taking everything so damn serious and just do something awesome. Not yet. I say ditch every musical tie he's made and just go solo ala David Byrne.

I've enjoyed the new Spoon album. I appreciate their consistency, but I think they need fill out their sound a little. I'm growing tired of minimalism and maximumismism (notaword)

I completely agree with you about Fiery Furnaces. I kept liking one element out of there songs and then the rest of it's like "Oh, I guess this isn't going to be a melody anymore"

Mal, I think it's time to listen to Big Star if you haven't already. It feels right.

when i saw the fiery furnaces they played everything with NO keyboards or piano, and super fast. it was insane.

Our FF lineup: two drummers, one electric guitar, Matt on organ. Rhythm section good, melody section kind of fucking annoying.

Smashing pumpkins minus Mr James Iha is something I'm a little bit leary of myself. I know his stuff isn't that great on it's own, but I think James lends something important to the band.

I highly recommend you look out the film (or at least the soundtrack to the film) Linda Linda Linda, which James Iha did the soundtrack for. It's better than anything you'll hear on a Pumpkins album.

He also produced the music for a jpop singer Chara! it's great, it sounds like smashing pumpkins if it were lead by a Japanese lead singer. It's definatly a bizarro-world feeling.

I know. I heard the new single and thought the guitar work was very unSP. It's jarringly out of place for me. It seems to have totally the wrong, I dunno, 'voice'?

Reminds me of when we got the Queens of the Stone Age CD in (the one after the one Dave Grohl did the drums on) when I worked at Hot Topic (yes, eternal shame is mine). When we played it, I swore it wasn't Grohl on the drums. No one believed me. I finally dug out the CD insert and I was right.

Really good musicians seem to have very distinct play styles. I never really noticed Iha's work with SP and now I realize it was because he fit so well.

Fiery Furnaces played at my school last semester, and it was pretty cool. Eleanor sang from behind a lectern for part of the show.

I've got some pretty good pictures of that show up on my flickr account (flickr.com/photos/south_) if anyone's interested.

Haha I know. I lol'd quite a bit. I haven't seen the movie yet (I'm in the UK) but I work in a cinema and we're getting an early print, so shouldn't be long now.

Hey, anyone who saw the movie, did you see a trailer for the new J. J. Abrams movie codenamed 'Cloverfield'? I just caught it online - MAN A-FREAKIN-LIVE.... What a trailer!

The new Spoon album is fan-damn-tastic. I've been listening to an advance copy for a couple weeks now and today I spend money on it. One of the best bands out there today and completely underappreciated.

They got a good writeup in the New Yorker last month, and in the NYT this week, so that's pretty mainstream-crit. I think maybe they're a band that hasn't made their ultimate statement yet, but what they have done so far is so enjoyable.

Oh, they keep getting the critical acclaim, I'd just like to see them get a bit more respect from the general public. Then again, it's sometimes nice to like something so good that few others have heard of. (Few others that I regularly run into, that is.)

I like Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga though. Took me a while to really get into it in the wake of the greatness that was Gimmie Fiction. If this doesn't get them some attention from listeners I don't know what will.

I heard Spoon's "Finer Feeling" last week. It's an excellent track. I just wish iTunes had it as a DRM-free download.

I am dreading the rest of this summer in which all the teenyboppers at the mall are listening to the Smashing Pumpkins.

I listened to Green Day (sort of) in high school, long long ago. I was shocked when they became popular with the kiddies again a couple of years back. Same sorta thing.

How do you listen to that? Like, in chronological order, or what? I haven't listened to those discs in years. Hope made me throw out the box, too. (I kept the CDs)
[info]lucidtv wrote:

I have a tupperware container for boxed sets like it, in storage. I ripped them all to mp3 ages ago and have it on random... except for the Pistachio Medley track, which I save for seperate listening. My favorite song on there at the moment is 'Pennies'.

[info]destroyerzooey wrote:

That's a good idea, I should rip all those. Actually, I bought ZEITGEIST today (shame on me) and then had the thought that I should rip all their old CDs and make my own personal best-of, something that I've never done before with this band.

did you see the sp-related art that leaked onto the internet? all naked porn star girls posing with aging billy, all paris hilton + bombs. they ensured that i wouldn't ever buy the new sp album, but i'm still a lil jealous of a friend of mine that saw them on this last tour-thing they did. they played "starla"! it's like they're suddenly the fan-panderin' band i so longed for ten yrs ago. :(

(i saw them live 3 times and they were good, but didn't do any of that famous 3-hour silverfuck jam stuff)

SP in 2007 = Weezer in 2001. Nail on the head. I've been trying to think of how to put my feelings for this particular adolescence-destroying reunion into words, and that about does it.
[info]destroyerzooey wrote:

Someone mentioned Green Day above but the difference with them was that their comeback CD was probably their best work to date. Weezer and the Pumpkins both issued piss-poor retreads. I can only hope that the teenybopper ruled-by-clearchannel masses don't bite.

I've never seen that. It's beautiful.

They have a new video for "The Underdog" that I saw the other day. Nothing like this one, but it's a cute deconstruction of their sound.
[info]atomicpanda wrote:

Still one of my favorite songs. I'll have to track down that other video.

This all got me thinking about other Austin bands. If you're at all into shoegazer type music might want to check out http://www.experimentalaircraft.com/ I found their second CD by chance in a local Austin used CD store. I was like 'Experimental Aircraft? With a name like that I gotta find out what this sounds like.' Another one of my favorite songs, Symphony, is on the site.

By the way, did you get my email several months back about the domain names I want to give you? I was just some dumb spur of the moment thing. If you don't want them that's cool. I'll just keep them pointed at the Scott Pilgrim site.

My friend told me about the spoon album and its ridiculous name the other day lol. I'm excited for it, I'd like to have a listen.

I feel the same way about the fiery furnaces.

And as for the pumpkins new album, I'm not too excited.

Yeah, I've done that a number of times. They put out their own "best of" CD at the tail end of their original incarnation, but it was just a "singles" collection if you know what I mean.

If you do your own SP mix CD, post it -- I'll post mine. Their catalog is so huge that getting it on 1 CD is hard.

Yeah, i have the old Rotten Apples best of. Notable mostly for not having the End is the Beginning. The bonus disc was okay though.

I'm not sure if I'll be able to get it down to one disc either. I think I should, though. It's a noble challenge. So many of them will be b-sides, I bet.
