Scott Pilgrim Evolution
  1. Scott Pilgrim's Precious Little Life (Vol 1) cover. Drawn before the interior art for the book, so it's the earliest "canon" drawing, really. February 2004, I think.

  2. Detail from a panel from Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World (Vol 2), coloured for promotional buttons. Late 2004 / early 2005.

  3. Drawn after Vol 2, for promotional purposes (website). May 2005, probably.

  4. Drawn shortly before starting on Vol 3, for promotional purposes (a poster). May or June 2005.

  5. Detail from Scott Pilgrim & the Infinite Sadness (Vol 3), coloured for promotional buttons. March 2006, I think.

  6. Drawn after finishing Vol 3, for promotional purposes (release party, with Dinosaur Comics). May 2006.

  7. Drawn after finishing Vol 3, for promotional purposes (for display). Oops, this was drawn before the dinosaur one: April 2006.

  8. Detail from Scott Pilgrim Gets it Together (Vol 4), coloured for a forthcoming promotional postcard. March 2007.

Creepy, isn't it?

I really like the way he looks right now (the 8th picture was drawn just last week).

I've obviously been a horribly inconsistent artist, but maybe the character design is... is... kinda malleable? I dunno!

Malleable is good. I like that he keeps changing, its not like you're getting WORSE!

It all looks pretty scottish to me, but maybe my eyes aren't as picky at seeing inconsistency.
Think the biggest differences are from the first picture to everything else - it might be the eyes, they're less round and more... ovaleveure.

I have one word for you:

Garfield

That's it, that's all, the only word. Sorry.

I want a promotional button!

oh yeah! seeing all his faces like this, I can see how people draw similarity between Scott Pilgrim and Clarence

I conclude it's the ratio of face and ears :D

I wish I could marry him.

Change is good. People start to look different the longer you know them, not just due to aging, just getting to see them more often and picking up new details.

These changes are nothing. Next time you're in a good comics store, look at the beginning of the first volume of Cerebus, and then look in a later volume. Or check out how Mickey Mouse changed over the years. Or Superman, or Batman.

Because I can't resist

Malleable? Or O'Malleable?

...I know, I know.

i don't know... a hairstyle can look different ways throughout the day, or sometimes the same style can look different in photographs. i think it's bitchin', to quote that old tori amos t-shirt i once had.

also, the most recent promo postcard... is that for diamond accounts?

No, it's just for me... hopefully we'll have them at APE and MoCCA, etc. Something to tide people over until the book is done.

Yeah, at some point in Vol 2 the hands evolved into the "modern O'Malley hand", squared off with fingernails and sometimes knuckle lines.

Don't you mean MALLEYable?

HO HO HO.

Okay, I'm a loser. I'll shut up.

The ears.. they keep... changing!

Really? I thought the ears stayed pretty similar. The latest ears have changed the most, i've started making them a bit wider and cuter.

I exaggerate, but there's definitely a subtle change:

1. Ears small enough to hide behind hair and coat.
2. More realistic ear with angled edges.
3-6. The standard Scott ear, big and round.
7. Can't be sure behind everything but somethings changed.
8. The new gold standard for Scott ears! More angular with a straight-ish edge along the top.

I actually think you standardized him pretty quickly, after the first image he stays pretty consistent. Especially if you look back at the changes some other comic characters have gone through early on (Cerebus for instance).

Yeah, I was going to make more comments but it was bedtime.

Vol 1: oval eyes, unregulated messy hair, squarish jaw

Vol 2: eyes and jaw gradually become more circular

Vol 3: attempt to make the hair more standardized

Vol 4: continuing to tweak hair and general drawing/inking style (towards a cleaner and more cartoony look, for the most part)

I think the character design style was pretty much solidified by the end of Vol 2, I've just had my ups and downs in terms of actually being able to draw and ink, and I've gradually been refining things as I continue.

to my eyes, at quick glance, they all look fairly consistent.. excepting the first one.. and that may be because you can't see his teeth.

I like shaggy-haired Scott the best (see 1 and 7).

I wonder if the development will ever end! What's the next step in the style evolution.

I like that it's changed subtley, lends an organic charm to it.

I've got your third pun, RIGHT HERE

Malleable? Or is he Brilliant-lee O'Malleable!? Oh Jesus I want to burn my hands for typing those words.

I hate that he changed! Stop changing him!

Okay, I'm just kidding. I was just going to say the same thing everyone else said, but they all beat me to it. He's changed, but it's always easy to tell he's Scott.

The best part about this post is when you are a writer and NOT an artist and you just sort of stare at all the designs and go "Yes....that is the character in question." and then you get drunk and play wii tennis

hee hee hee. also: i think the biggest changes have come along as you get to know his personality? at the end he feels ok about squinting his eyes shut. it means that he trusts us.

That Dinosaur Comics poster has always been a favorite.

ALSO: In Front Of Cat is not always such a fun place to be!

My kitty sometimes likes to sit on my laptop while I'm trying to use it, and has mastered shutting it down using some combination of her bum and feet.

mine was OK last night, she tried to chase the mouse pointer for a minute but then she just settled down in front of the monitor (curled up so she wasn't in my way).

I would just like to say two things.

I love looking at the evolution of characters like this - like the way Herge drew Tintin, it's cool to look at; it turns the books into a timeline. Who knows what the future will bring?

Also I had a O'Malleable joke but stopped myself from going any further. I feel good now.

I like the evolution. He definately looks much more awesomer now than at the start!

Scott's so cool.
He'd be even cooler in tOFU *cough*dueintwoweeks*cough*!

... yes, blatant pimping.

Though there is some evolution. When you actually compare #2 and #8 there isn't much of a difference. I think the big difference in in #1. I would also like to say that #7 is superior to #1 because of it's simplicity. I find myself starting out making things way more detailed, then as the story progresses the detail shifts to what actually works. The change from #1 to the actual comic seems to reflect this.

Great art, and great characters.

Wow, I hadn't seen that one before. He looks like a refugee from the set of Roswell/Smallville.

Modern Scott (scottus sapiens) is way more interesting as a species.

this comment got me really pumped thinking about 'scottus superior' and how he'd probably be the dude from 'legendary wings' or something. and then that face thing would barf tornados at him and he'd deflect them with his bass.

the first scott looks very un-scott to me now in contrast to the rest; he's too hot or something, when he's supposed to be foolishly cute and endearing like the rest. and what everyone else said, minus the puns.

The fourth one really reminds me of Dave Grohl, for some reason.
