kitties
Wizard did a spread on Scott Pilgrim as their "Indie of the Year". Woooooo! I used to read Wizard when I was about 14. I had a year or two worth of them back in the mid-90s. In fact, I know Wizard was the first place I ever saw stuff like Chris Ware, and some of my earliest information about manga came from there too. So, that's nice. I mean, mainly it was Joe Madureira and hilarious captions and photos of action figures, etc. I'm curious to see what kind of sophomoric nonsense they spewed about Scott P., so does anyone have a copy of the issue (#183) that they could scan for me?

CONTENT! Here is a little Salamander Dream comic I did last year (in my sketchbook). Click to bigg up.
Salamander Goes to College

Scott 4 update: I feel okay about the drawings currently. Drawing these things is like a huge existential dilemma. I cannot explain the rollercoaster of emotions that one goes through while drawing an extremely long graphic novel. This book will be very long, at least a dozen pages longer than book 2, and possibly another dozen longer than that. I'm trying to trim it a bit as I draw, but the script was definitely quite long. I don't want to turn into Harry Potter over here; I'm going to try to keep each book around the 200-page mark. I'm making a conservative estimate that the book will come out next summer. (I wonder if the last Harry Potter will come out next summer?!?!?)

If you turn into Harry Potter you will at least have 12.2 billion times as many fans, if that's any consolation.

(I love the Salamander strip in so many ways.)

If I turn into Harry Potter I'll do some magic so I never have to draw comics again.

if you turn into harry potter, i will expect that you'll be well schooled in the finer arts of magic... moreso than the real harry potter, who's head is always in the clouds, what with being the chosen one and all that shit... no mal. you must be a greater harry potter.. .the kind of harry potter who plays things safe and practices white magic only.

That's awesome about Wizard, dude. The most I've done is place runner up in a fanart contest they had earlier this year.

I think releasing Harry Potter Year 7 on 07/07/07 is too much of an opportunity for JK Rowling and Co. to pass up. I mean, dammit, look at those sevens! Not to mention it'll practically coincide with the next movie. Rock on.

I think we have two open copies of Wizard 183 at SA currently, you're more than welcome to one of 'em (remind me next time you're in).

It's cool, they're sending me some copies, I guess. If you can't sell 'em then I'll take one, though.

re: rollercoaster of emotions working on a graphic novel...

I know what you mean. Amulet has been beating the crap out of me emotionally and physically for a year now. The difficult thing has been in establishing the characters and setting up for long arcs.

I've drawn about 300 pages now, need to redraw about 40 more, and it will all be whittled down into a 200 page book. I think that the extra pages that were cut will be felt by the reader when they read it, though. My theory is that if enough thought goes into every page, even a short book will feel grand. We'll see how it plays out, I guess...

The Salamander Dream comic is hilarious, by the way. :)

Wow - what a great Salamander Dream spoof!

Congrats on the Wizard spotlight. May it help you acquire enviable gear in the future. Or at least a Wii.

About the novel. Yeah, totally got that. Mine is around 120/150 pages, and if I had any hair on my head it would be falling...

The problem is not turning into Harry Potter. The problem is turning into J.K. Rowling.

Mr. O'Malley, have you ever thought about how freaking crazy it would be if you were like a Japanese manga artist and you had to rock out 20 pages per week? Now THAT would be nuts, my friend. DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES?!

Seriously, good luck on Scott 4. If you get stressed out, I'll fly out there and give you a brain massage if you pay me $5,000. And I'm completely serious.

Unfortunately i'm married, I own a house, I cook dinners, I drive to town, etc, so I could never possibly churn out pages like those dudes. It seriously requires having no life and being married to your work and never meeting your children, etc. Plus I don't have a stable of well-trained assistants to ink in my backgrounds and stuff. (I WISH)

Comics Are Magic. (Ooooo).
I work in a comic book store, and thought it was awesome to see you get some mainstream press (though the guys that read Wizard seem to be scared of black & white, an' Wizard themselves seems to think that Oni only puts out "girl comics")!

Same time... Ugh man, that whole "Imagine if Peter Parker had a rockin' indie band" crap... How the hell do you get a job reviewing comics for Wizard? Does it start with not knowing anything aside from "I like Marvel"? It's like water from a poisoned well. But then, most publicity is fairly good publicity, right? Hell, when I was young and knew nothing, I discovered Preacher through Wizard, so who knows how many of tomorrow's fans are reading today...?

Re: Comics Are Magic. (Ooooo).
Tomorrow's fans are reading goddamn Naruto, not wizard. Only yesterday's fans read wizard, even though it's (I hope) targeted at 13-yr-olds. I found it hilariously amusing when I was 13 or 14, but I flipped through that issue last night and was morally outraged on five to ten separate occasions!

When Moral Outrage becomes the norm...
The most offensive thing I've read in a Wizard recently, aside from any comment about women or homosexuality, was a Frank Cho interview... Basically, one of Cho's neighbors had died, and hadn't been discovered for a week or two, and the article went onto say how the dead neighbor would surly be kicking themselves now, 'cause they were going to miss out on Cho's new Avengers series.
It's true though, young people don't read Wizard; it's US magazine for scared, aging nerds... (actually, I think Wizard is for people who're still frightened by grown-up sexuality, thus their strange hatred for women and gays.) (Also, is the magazine published by Marvel? All it ever talks about is how much it loves Marvel. Even your stuff is referenced to be related to a Marvel property.)
We always have an open Wizard at work. I pick it up, I get angry, I throw it down. An day later, I pick it up, I get angry...
